The New Sewing Room
April 2, 2011 at 6:38 am | Posted in Sewing Room | 49 CommentsIt occurred to me the other day that we have actually been in this house already for over 6 months, and I promised you photos of the new sewing room months ago and I still haven’t delivered. Before Donna came down for SIT last week, I made a concerted effort to clean it all up for her first visit to the new house, and I almost got there. Now I have it briefly in a state where it looks pretty and tidy…so here you have it. At last.
My sewing room is what used to be the study. Here’s how it looked the day after moving day when the painters came in…..

And here it is now……

With the walls painted (China Silk by Haymes if you were asking) and carpets ripped up and replaced with bamboo flooring. Love. I find this is such a serene place…I only wish I had more time to spend in it!
Would you like a tour?

On the left is my sewing table, with lovely bright light and dolls quilts on the wall. (I have more to put up if you can see that yours is missing!). On the back wall is my bookshelf, filled with tubs of WIP, magazines, ribbons, Perle thread and my Blythes and miniatures (yes, I caught the craze…that might be a separate post). On the right is the cutting table of my dreams. And on the very far left (you can just see the corner) is my desk…..

I like the fact that I can zip between my desk, sewing table and cutting table without getting out of my chair!
Here’s more of the back wall…

And to the right of that…is this:

and this……

The cutting table of my dreams, which holds all sorts of charm packs, notions, threads, scraps, my Liberty collection, cute stuff from Japan. It’s a treasure trove of delightfulness in those drawers!
And behind the glass door is this….

And behind the white doors?

You want to see?

There is even more fabric tucked in there on the right. Yikes…

Here’s the Heather Ross stash….

At least it is messy enough to prove that I use it!!
On the other side (there are 2 sets of doors along that wall)….

is the really messy part. There are large tubs of batting, vintage sheets, old WIPs…and small tubs of Australian screenprinted fabrics, felt, yarn…and I have no idea what else. Plus my growing collection of miniatures….

So! There you have it! No more pink!
That’s the new sewing room and I feel very blessed to have such a space to call my own. Hope you enjoyed the tour!

You really do have a sewing room to die for! Although mine was custom-built, I don’t think that it works quite as beautifully as yours. And your stash – WOW! And I thought that I had a lot of fabric! I spot lots of Denyse Schmidt there…drool. Thanks for sharing it all – just beautiful.

Godzooks! What a heavenly space to sew in. And just look at all that delicious Munki Munki fabric!

Oh My, I have serious craft room envy… I want to ask where you got all your furniture? But most important does ypur sewing table get the morning or afternoon sun?
I was thinking about putting my sewing table across the windows, but we get the hot Qld afternoon sun and I was concerned for the machine!
Comment by Car— April 2, 2011 #
IKEA! All of it! Can’t beat it for clean, simple lines and good prices!
My sewing table gets the morning sun. I don’t think I would have set it up like that if it were afternoon sun. I agree about your concern for your machine.
Thanks for your comment!

Oh, Sheridan! Even although I’m not a sewer (yet), your little haven is simply sublime. Bravo you. That cutting table with the divine fabric covered drawers is sensational – and to think it houses Liberty loveliness, too. And as for that fabric, it is jaw-droppingly beautiful. Enjoy it, you lucky duck! J x

*swoon*
Did you know I am up for adoption?
Comment by ingrid— April 6, 2011 #
Wow! I can’t wait till I own my house so I can paint my sewing room and properly decorate it. At the moment it is a little boring and uninspiring. But we need to wait until after the wedding to do that so I have to hold off.
Oh btw I just found your blog via Mealy & I who mentioned she had just attended the Sydney SIT. I am so coming next year! It looks like awesome fun and I would love to meet the ladies who I chat to via the blog world.
Comment by Kat— April 6, 2011 #
They still have that verde unit here in Ikea in Canada and I always think of you when I see it. Must get one before I move back to Oz. Your room is just gorgeous

Comment by Erika Sews— April 8, 2011 #
I have no words! That is STUNNING. And I am extremely jealous! My sewing room is my dining room table with everything shoved into a couple of large plastic tubs. Very unsatisfactory… Clearly we need to move house!
Comment by Nic— April 8, 2011 #
I just stumbled onto your blog and found this wonderful and inspiring photos! I currently live in an apartment with my boyfriend and only have a small dining room (if thats what you could call it) to work in. I have to say you’ve given me so much motivation and inspiration to clean up my space and make it more work friendly! Thank you!
