Who’s that girl?

July 6, 2009 at 11:44 am | In Fabric | 54 Comments

One of the best things about winning the lottery, in my opinion, would be sharing it. I love to lie in bed at night, close my eyes, and think about the reaction I’d get. Imagine my friends when I gave them a cheque to pay off their mortgage. Surprise my Dad with a house that he would love. A home for my brother and a really fast expensive car. And for Mum? Maybe a villa in France so she could escape there as often as she wanted. With a plane. How much does a lear jet cost, exactly?

However.

We didn’t win last week. And we don’t buy tickets regularly, so there is not much chance of us winning if we don’t buy a ticket.

So. To celebrate my own little win of a different kind, my brand new Bernina Aurora 440QE, I am going to give away something that I love very, very much. Because it really is better to give than receive and I want my readers to share in the Favourites Drawer and in all the swap goodness that has been crisscrossing the Pacific Ocean recently.

And let’s make this also a celebration for my 3 year blogiversary which is coming up this month. 3 years ago, I started this blog as a way of journalling my crafting efforts and it has been a wonderful experience. I might bake myself a cake to celebrate.

To enter, I want you to suggest a name for my new sewing machine.

I’m pretty sure that she is female, if that helps. Not just because she sews, but because she is helpful, intuitive, capable of multi-tasking and efficient. Sounds like a female to me.

You can suggest a maximum of two names each. Please leave only one comment each.

There are two parts to this giveaway.

The first part won’t be a random drawing. I will be choosing the name I like best, and the first person who suggests that name (in case of double-ups) will be the winner. The winner will have their choice of the two prizes on offer.

The second part is a random drawing from the remaining commenters. Comments that don’t leave a suggested name for the sewing machine will not be eligible to enter.

Entries will close at midnight (AEST) Friday July 10, 2009. International readers are welcome to enter.

And the prizes?

Two little packs of 10 x 5″ charm squares of the hottest fabrics in the swap world right now.

The first pack contains out of print, very hard to find fabrics by Heather Ross. These are either from her Lightning Bugs range, or from Munki Munki. You’ll get one piece each of beautifully fussy-cut Gnomes on yellow, Calypso, Ice Cream Vans,  Mushrooms on white, Beach Day, Sushi, Farmer’s Market, Goldfish on blue, Birthday Party and Martians.

The second pack contains out of print, very hard to find fabrics from Denyse Schmidt’s Flea Market Fancy range. You’ll get one each of Seedlings in pink, Posies in aqua, Bouquet in lime, Posies in brown, Dotted leaves in red, Tulip Medallion in blue, Dots in pink/red, Bouquet in aqua, Tulip Medallion in gold, and, yes, the elusive Seedlings in grey.

Cool, huh? I love these fabrics. They are my very favourites of all my favourites.

And can I just be a bit picky about this? Please don’t go and broadcast this giveaway. I’m not doing this to get hits on my blog and I don’t want a heap of strangers coming in and trying to win.

I want two of you, my regular readers, to win.

Because I love it that you visit here, and you comment, and you encourage and support me, and you are always here when I need you and my little world would be very lonely without you.

  1. She has the look of an Emma to me, or something really crazy like Evinrude! : )

Happy 3 year blogiversary! Keep blogging, I love seeing what you do.

  2. That is such a great giveaway idea!

    My two name choices are:
    Mabel
    Audrey

Both very dignified names as befitting a well behaved lady :)

  3. The names Frances and Fraulein Maria are calling out to me!

  4. Congrats on the new machine!! I suggest Myra or Noreen. I think either is perfect! :)

  5. Betty. I don’t even need a second choice :P

  6. Love, love, love your favourites drawer!!

When I look at your machine, the large font QE really stands out. Makes me think Of Queen Elizabeth, so my suggested name would have to be Lizzie!

  7. I asked Miss Birdie (my little Bernina) what she thought a good name would be. She just cowered in fear because she saw the lustful look in my eyes.. a tinge of jealousy perhaps. I assured her that she was just fine and we weren’t moving on from each other. We both agreed your new gal is spectacular. And so she’s suggested Benni, and I’ll suggest with Ol Blue.

Best of luck with her, we can’t wait to see what she helps you create.

  8. Diva – ’cause she’s so fancy! That would suit her perfectly!!

  9. OK…..I will have to pass on the naming of the naming of the machine.

However, I am a definite fan of your blog and someone with a HUGE appreciation for the swaps that you host! So count me in for the random drawing!

    :)
    Barbara

  10. Let’s see …..
    Nina?
    or maybe ……
    Bette?
Happy blogiversary and hope you are loving the new machine.
    I LOOOOOVE mine!!!!
    Andi :-)

  11. I am going to suggest “Pandora” for the surprises and unknown projects she will produce

  12. Hmmm, she’s a beauty. How ’bout Nina or Liza? Hope you make lots of wonderful memories together. :)

  13. I have no idea why this just popped in my head, but Gladys came to mind – maybe cuz she makes ya glad?

  14. I have a name ~ Gracie

I don’t want a prize….my biggest reward is reading your blog every day and laughing at all your adorable readers who leave their hysterical comments. You and your girls are inspirational and you teach us ‘oldies’ such a lot about life.
mmmmm…… that villa in France would have been quite enjoyable!!
    Luv ya ,
    Mum

  15. Hiya – Great machine – I have one myself (named Betty) – How about Mildred {Millie} or Suzie. Anyway enjoy -the best function is the BSR and if you go here there is a great tutorial for this feature

  16. Your mum commented! How superb is that! Should you name your machine after your mum? How about you name it after my mum – Alison, or as she is often known “Aunty Al” – dependable, reliable, inspirational, fine eye for detail. Or Ada. That was my very crafty Nanna’s name. By the way, I love that you are doing this giveaway just for regulars Sheridan. You really are one special woman.

  17. Bertha! Bertha was a big green machine in a TV progamme I watched when I was little, and this was the theme tune….

“Bertha, lovely Bertha, you are a lovely machine
Any anyone who works with you will know just what I mean.
Bertha, lovely Bertha, sometimes I think you’re a dream
When we work out what you have to do,
You can always turn the goods out, always turn the goods out,
    We can depend upon you.
Clicking in the day and flashing in the night,
    Your computer is shining brightly,
Some people say you’ve a mind of your own,
And I think that’s very likely, likely.
Bertha, lovely Bertha, sometimes I think you’re a dream,
When we work out what you have to do,
You can always turn the goods out, always turn the goods out,
    We can depend upon you.”

I think that just about sums it up!

    Second choice, Ophelia, means helpful.

Happy Blogiversary, I love reading what you’re up to.
    x

  18. I don’t often (ever?) comment, but I do read regularly.

I think she sounds like a Dorcas, or possibly a Tabitha.

Dorcas ‘was always doing good and helping the poor’. Tabitha is the Greek translation of Dorcas.

  19. Amelie… or Bettie

    I don’t blog, but I read/check out yours daily! :)

  20. Oh, I think that must be BELLA, you know, the one that whips up all the gorgeous quilts.

  21. I second Bertha, I was trying to stiple and watch/listen to the t.v last night to no avail as my Janome is just the loudest thing ever. I was trying to imagine Bertha the Bernina on the table, hardworking, reliable and seen but hardly heard!

  22. You could use the girls name I never got to use – Millie or else Rosie.

But please don’t put me in a drawer for fabric. That would be almost as bad as having to host a scrapbooking party……which i am doing in less than 2 weeks. Wanna come?

  23. She has to be a Bertie!! A female Bertie though :)

Hmmm she could also be a Nina :P

Both names taken from what she actually is!!

She is very very pretty btw!!

  24. I was thinking Bertha too but then I read the comment from your mum and I definitely think maybe her name or her middle name should get a look in. I think it’s awesome your mum is reading and commenting on your blog, mine has trouble turning the computer on!

  25. I was thinking Nina too! I knew a Nina in my advertising days, a real go getter, don’t mess with me chick! Maybe Heather after Miss Ross??

I can’t believe your 3 year blogiversary is coming up this month! Same here!!!!! July the 26th I think….

  26. First off I see the large Q E. That reminds me of Queen Elibeth, either one. will do. So my propsals are Queenie of Lizzie or any name that reminds you of those monarchs.

    • I should always check my spelling. I am referring to the Queens Elizabeth.

  27. Oooh such pretty pretty fabric!!! Darn, I was going to suggest Rosie as well, that is the name that my daughter chooses for everything from barbie dolls to her dinosaurs ;) Hmm, I was thinking today that if I ever got a duck I’d name it Nikita – not sure if this would be suitable for a sewing machine though LOL. Ok I’m way out of my depth here.

Congrats on the 3 year blogaversary, I really love reading your blog and I look forward to the next 3 year giveaway ;)

  28. Bernie, short for Bernina & Bernadette.

Queenie – (If you say Q E together enough, you eventually get to Queenie.)

  29. Wow, this is a tough one! I’m going to take a wild guess with “Bonnie”. I worked with a Bonnie once, and she was definitely helpful and efficient and great at multi-tasking. And I like that “bonnie” is also another word for “pretty”, because I’m sure you’ll make lots of beautiful things with her!

  30. Congratulations on your win! She definitely looks like a Bernice to me.

  31. It’s simple, she is a Roxanne for sure. Just like in the lyrics from the Police song I don’t think you will be sharing her with anyone else! Or Roxy for short!

  32. I’m going to say Heather for Heather Ross. Or Augie, just because I like that name!

  33. What a lovely machine. I think she is Mimi. Or MiMi.

    :)

  34. I can’t wait to see what you create with your new machine! I have the same one, mine’s name is Bertha (I LOVE that others have suggested that name as well, because she’s a sturdy little workhorse. =) For yours, what about Beatrice or Bernatrude? Something stern and reliable…dependable and unfussy =) That’s what a Bernina is to me!

  35. May sound funny but I have always lovinly referred to my kids by using a baby before their names when they are little so I would say
Baby Nina or Baby Bennie :)

  36. I LOVE your new machine! I wish I had such a lovely that needed a name. I’ve been thinking on it and have decided on Alice (although I prefer the spelling Alyss).

And congratulations on 3 years! Having just started a few months ago, I can well appreciate long-time bloggers.

  37. We always name things in our house with a rythming name but since Betty is taken Miss Ellie and I suggest:

Felicity for good luck. In Latin felix means happy and felicitas is good luck so since getting this machine is like winning the lottery I hope it brings you good luck and happiness. (all those Latin classes at uni actually do help with some things)

Juliet. love at first sight etc.

I can’t believe you have cut into your favourites.

  38. I thought of my name before I read the other comments. And there are a lot that are quite similar.

But i am going for Bethany – or just Beth.

I have no idea why. It is just the name that came to mind.

  39. It is a lovely machine – my choice of name is MINERVA (or Minny for short)
She is the Roman goddess of Wisdom, Learning, the Arts, Sciences, Medicine, Dyeing, Trade, and of War. Daughter of Jupiter, protectress of commerce, industry and education.
    And all round good egg.
I was tempted to suggest ‘Diana’ but she was really beautiful and I don’t think your machine is… she is just very practical and industrious. She will also create great art. This was really fun.
    thanks

  40. I think you should name her “Nina”
    or “Bertie”
    good luck!
My kids have the crazies right now!

  41. She looks like a Bee Bee. (BB) Im green with envy… what a cool machine…

  42. you are always so thoughtful and generous! and you have amazing taste in fabric. Congratulations on your new machine. I have been pondering this, right now I like Matilda. I’ll keep thinking and let you know if anything else feels right :)

  43. What a beutiful machine – you have won the lottery! Her name should be Petal as you will admire all her beauty as you create over the years to come.

  44. Congratulations on your new machine…

Actually is is a boy name, but how about Cotton? Maybe Hot Cotton or Aunt Cotton?

I read some of your previous post relative to food allergies… good luck with that, I have two children and have been dealing the their allergies for over 6 years…

  45. If she is helpful, intuitive, capable of multi-tasking and efficient, I would call her “Diana Prince” ;D
I have the 430 and I called her “ma copine” which means in French “my girlfriend”.
    Happy sewing with your girlfriend!

  46. I think she should be called Sissy! It is my favorite pet name for all the little girls in my life, and it is fun to say too! :) love the new machine, and the giveaway fabrics! By the way, I am still awaiting my vintage quilt swap fq’s! I like to imagine them on the ocean somewhere having a great adventure on their way to me! Next time I won’t bd so cheap on the shipping! Lol

  47. It’s lovely to see the pictures of your heather ross munki fabrics..I’ve been trying to resist entering this competition as I’ve yet to actually use my HR stash (but I will)! It is a lovely competition btw- such beautiful squares…indeed the favourites of the faves!
My suggestion for a name is Wilma (cos I like W names). I see Wilma as steady and reliable with a bit of an artistic flair which is just what you want in a sewing machine!

  48. OOOH, fun! I love it when inanimate objects are such a part of our lives that they take on names and personalities of their own. Betty is by far my favourite name for your machine. Bernina Betty has a good ring, but I’m not the first one to suggest it. Although maybe if we all vote, it will still win? :)

  49. Happy Blogiversary Sheridan!! So glad you’re here! You have truly become my ‘go-to’ favourite blog (crawl, crawl)

The name ‘Imogen’ came to my mind – play on word ‘imagine’ which is how I would like to start any project involving delicious fabric and ‘that’ machine!!!

Talk about delicious fabric – YOUR stash is so obviously better than mine Hehe! Would love to give the HR a new and very welcoming home!

    Love, Bron

  50. I am a loyal reader, so I will comment! I think you should name her Hedwig. It’s a good German name, no nonsense and hard working. Also my grandmother’s name.

    I love all those munkis!!!!!

  51. And since I get two chances, I will offer another name: Ariel. It’s light and airy.

  52. How about “Her Royal Majesty, the Queen of Quilts”?
Happy Blogiversary and enjoy your new machine!

  53. [...] Queenie and I quilted this together, but I can’t blame her for the poor quilting. It was just a bit tricky to follow the lines. It was good practise to get a feel for how to move fabric around under the needle. But I probably won’t ever have to quilt like this again. Thank goodness. [...]
