And the sheets keep rolling in….
April 30, 2009 at 1:58 pm | In Vintage Sheet Swap | 7 CommentsOur poor old parcel delivery man has been run off his feet lately, as the parcels keep rolling in!
Here are just some of my favourites!
from Beth
from Lara
from Cris
from Jo
from {blogless} Barbara
and from her {blogless] friend Heather
from Cass
and from Bronwyn.
As I receive your parcel, I will send you an email so you know it has arrived.
If you are from North America, and have sent some sheets, but haven’t heard from me yet, please let me know. I just want to get an idea of how many deliveries I am waiting for. And how long I should wait.
I know there are a few Aussie girls who are running a bit late, but you’ll hopefully get yours here before the last of the international parcels arrive.
I’m not starting until everything is here, and I can’t wait to lay them all out and start swapping!
A big thanks to my Mum who has been busy scouring op shops to make sure we have enough lovely sheets to swap ourselves. She’s found some beauties! Thanks, Mum!
By the way, does anyone else find it ironic that I should be running a vintage sheet swap? I didn’t think about it until this arrived from eBay:
Reminds me of when I was a teenager and there was a rather risque advertising campaign by my corporate namesake. There was a huge billboard near my school, with a picture of a couple in a rather intimate embrace and the text,
“You never know what happens in a Sheridan bedroom”.
Yeah.
And, just to prove the point, I fished this old poster out from my teenage junk to show you. Ha! Glad I kept this! Too funny!

For the love of goldfish and gnomes
April 25, 2009 at 8:34 am | In Fabric | 11 CommentsIn the wake of the Heather Ross legal drama, I have been so much more appreciative of my Lightning Bugs quilt. I used nearly every fabric from Heather’s Lightning Bug and Other Mysteries range in this quilt. Except, I think, for the mushrooms, which I could never quite get my hands on.
There’s nothing quite like the soft feel of a Heather Ross fabric (I think it’s called sueded poplin), and it’s lovely to curl up under 6 yards of pink campervan backing. Of course, that seems so extravagant now, in light of the scarcity of these fabrics. I feel like I am hugging an heirloom and I love searching the quilt for all the little oddities that Heather includes in her fabrics.
I tried to share this with my husband recently. We’re not prone to talking about fabric as he’s not terribly interested, but given the legal side of this, I thought it might have been somewhat interesting for him.
I gave him a bit of a summary and explained my sadness that there would be no more pink bicycles, campervans, beagles or gnomes.
That seemed to get his attention.
“Gnomes?”
“Yes, gnomes! Here, look! Carrying mushrooms in tiny wheelbarrows!” I said as I thrust it in front of him. “And there’s more, you know! There are fabrics with tadpoles in jars and horses and frogs on lilypads and my favourite ever Russian Dolls in lilac!”
“Is she a friend of yours?”
“Well, no. I mean, I’m sure she’s perfectly lovely and all, but I can’t say we’re friends. Our relationship would be more like designer/copious consumer.”
“Does she need help?”
“No, um, I’m sure she has a perfectly good legal team, but thank you, my sweetheart. Could you just look at the seagulls! The swimmers! And I have more, you know. There are mermaids and octopii and seahorses! I love seahorses!”
“Because it sounds to me like restraint of trade.”
“Well, yes, it probably is! Restraint of trade of rabbits in race-cars! It’s unbelievable! Who would want to stop the trade of goldfish in bags? Goldfish named Spooky, Swimmy, Goldie, Helen and Bjorn!”
“She names her goldfish?”
“Yes! And there’s also Andrew, Robert, Malcolm and Whit!’
“She named a goldfish Malcolm?”
“I know!”
“Clearly, she needs help. But not mine.”
———–
I gave up at that point. Husbands and fabric shall probably never mix. But Heather Ross and fabric should always be together and I’m so sad and disappointed that this has come about. Needless to say, I snatched up as much as I could find of her latest and last line, Far Far Away.
It’s a double gauze cotton and incredibly soft and I think it will have to stay in the never-to-be-cut pile. Unless one day I can find a project, and be sure enough of my sewing skills, to do it justice.
I will leave you with the last of the Heather Ross unique, imaginative designs in such beautiful colours. You can weep with me as you say goodbye to unicorns, snails, frogs and princesses and peas.

Thank you for the fabrics, Heather Ross.
Google Reader and the Next button
April 24, 2009 at 6:36 am | In Miscellaneous | 10 CommentsOkay, I hear you! I have followed all the advice in blogland, and switched over to Google Reader. And I have found, under Settings and then Goodies, where the elusive Next button is.
And then it says to drag it over to your Bookmarks Bar.
Except, it doesn’t tell idiots like me where the *#&^ing bookmarks bar is!
I have been dragging that Next button all over the blooming house!!!
Can anyone help?
Keep in mind that you will have to be very explicit with directions. I’m very tired and very vague at the moment. Did I tell you I forgot to put my shoes on the other day and wore my slippers out in public? Yeah.
Henry now reminds me every time we leave the house to put my shoes on.
Thankfully.
In the meantime, I am going back to the safety of Bloglines and cuddling up under it’s gentle caresses.
The Importance of Being Four
April 23, 2009 at 6:46 am | In Henry | 8 CommentsTurning four has been a huge milestone for young Henry. He talks so much about now being older than his friends, who, apparently are ‘littler’ than he is. Oh, yeah, by a week. And he has been carrying around a photo of himself from last year. “This is me when I was three. But I am not three anymore. I am four. This is old. This is when I was three.”
Repeat. Often.
I guess he is learning about getting older, and how he fits into the world, and at the moment, he thinks he has a starring role. Well, he probably will….
“I am going to do a magic trick for you. See there is nothing in my hand? Now I will wave my magic (insert current item in his right hand here….paper? tissue? hat?) over my hand and……ta da!!!! Now you can see a tomato!”
And then he carefully puts one forearm behind his back, and one across his middle and takes a bow.
Hilarious.
Anyway, since a certain young lady has me up early, I’ll share a few pictures from last week.
On his birthday we went to the Powerhouse Musuem. There is so much to do there, we all thoroughly enjoyed it. I think his favourite part was an exhibit called Zoe’s House.
Have a quick look at the link to see what it’s about. It was a fascinating thing to watch as a bunch of 3, 4, and 5 year olds make a worksite ‘work’ with no interaction or guidance from adults. There was just always a child there to do each job, as if by magic. Someone to open the gate, someone to turn the conveyor belt, someone to load the bricks. I found it absolutely amazing to observe.
Here’s our little worker:
And my favourite photo:
On the weekend we had a party for him with some farmyard animals, including a pony. The pony rides were very popular.
We bought him a camera.
And his friend Alex bought him a Spiderman costume, which promptly replaced his shirt for the day.
There were guinea pigs, sheep, goats, chickens and a duck. All available to cuddle and pet and brush.
Emmeline even had her first ride on a pony….
Here’s the cake, a number 4 dotted with farmyard animals.
It’s all dairy free, and the breadsticks are meant to look like a fence. This creation took me 4 cakes, 4.5 hours and turning ABC kids on for a 4 month old to watch. World’s Worst Mother Award goes to me. She’s 4 months old!
{edited to add, before the parenting police seriously pounce on me, that she didn’t watch TV for 4.5 hours! More like 30 minutes! She was asleep for most of the time, and the last part she was nestled in the sling right next to me. Just in case you were wondering.}
Luckily, Henry was having an afternoon nap after his big day at the musuem the previous day. But he came downstairs to look at the cake and declare that it “wasn’t a proper number four cake…it doesn’t have marshmallows!” Hence the marshmallows added on around the edge.
Thankfully it then got the nod of approval. Phew.
A lovely day was had by all. We were blessed with a beautiful day and lots of good friends to help us celebrate.
I feel so very, very lucky.
Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat
April 17, 2009 at 10:52 am | In General Sewing, Henry | 7 CommentsOr actually sew something.
These kids are taking up way too much space on this blog and they aren’t paying rent. Yet.
Speaking of which, thank you all for your lovely birthday wishes for our big grown up boy. He has his party tomorrow; after that I’ll post a birthday recap because already there are some cool pictures.
This year’s birthday present for Henry and his 4 closest friends (and a little brother of one who has a birthday in the same April frenzy) was a superhero cape. I can highly recommend the tutorial over at Puking Pastilles.
The funny thing was, I decided to make these capes back in late January. The superhero phase hadn’t hit yet, but I had been warned, and I thought it was an easy enough thing to sew 6 times over. I kept everything well hidden from young Henry, but I was shocked to discover a few weeks later that he was asking for a Batman cape. “How can I be a Batman without a cape?”, he would ask over and over. I have been smugly smiling at him for months.
I made two girl ones and four boy ones (if the truth be told, there are still two boy ones to be finished as those birthdays are still a week away).
They are reversible. And very cool. I can say that because I didn’t design them. Very cool.
Here are the girls’…..
apologies for how crinkly they are; they were ironed and folded for wrapping before I realised I hadn’t taken photos.
And here are the boys’….
Here is Donna’s little girl wearing her “action hero” cape…
And here is Henry unwrapping his yesterday. Can you see the little wry smile as he realises what it is?
And he wore it all day. Here is a day in the life of a superhero on his birthday.
Reading birthday cards…
Gasping in awe at the Powerhouse Museum…..
And hanging out with Poppy…..
I don’t often get this motherhood gig right. But this? This hit the mark.
I’m still smiling smugly.
Happy Birthday, dear Henry
April 15, 2009 at 3:39 pm | In Henry | 14 CommentsIt’s nearly 3:00pm on a windy April afternoon as I write this. Four years ago I wasn’t a mother. I tried to explain this to you this morning and you looked at me like I was talking Swahili. I guess it is incomprehensible that your mother, who you have always known to be there, wasn’t always a mother.
But four years ago, about now, I parked my car at the local Bunnings. I’d had a busy day. That morning I cooked a big batch of green chicken curry and froze it in meal sized portions. Your due date was just over a week away and I was getting ready. Our house was being built and I had been to the site to talk to the electricians, then to the tile showroom to pick up some sealant, and then I headed off to Bunnings to pick up something. I can’t remember now. All I remember is that I got to the front door and my waters broke.
And it’s been four years of wonder and happiness and mayhem and tears. Tears of sadness at times, but mostly of joy and laughter.
You have sometimes been a challenging “3″ my dear boy! Your curiosity and logical thinking know no bounds. We are constantly amazed at the way you think, and the way you are connecting all the dots of the world around you. You have an innate sense of how things work together and how the world works. You have just learned so much in the last year!
You are at preschool three days a week this year, and they are also teaching you so much. You can still just count to 20, but you are advancing with your letters and the sounds that they make. You can always recognise and nearly write your name unaided. Your pre-writing skills have come a long way.
You have many friends there, and most recently have fallen in love with a little girl named Ella. You constantly tell me that you “love Ella the whole world”.
You are still doing swimming lessons every week and you have also progressed much further during the last year. You can paddle out to your teacher a few metres away. You can float on your back. You can dive underwater for hoops, and you have conquered your fear of diving off the ducky mat. I suspect it was the two weeks in the pool at Noosa in January that sorted that out!
Aside from Ella, your favourite person in the whole world is your Uncle Lindsay. I feel so very blessed that you have such a wonderful male role model in your life, aside from your Daddy and your Poppy. I don’t think a little boy can ever have too many men around who love him.
We have gone from a family of three…..
to a family of four.
You have a new little sister in your life, who you just love. “I love her because she is soft”, you tell me. It has been a huge adjustment and I am so proud of you for accepting her so generously and lovingly into your little life. I hope that you will always be a part of each other’s lives.
You continue to adore your Nanny and your Poppy and you are so lucky to be able to spend so much time with them. I just hope that you will remember all these special times.
Like a very wise friend once warned me, you are now into everything Superhero…Spiderman! Batman! Ben 10! I don’t even know where you discovered them, I’m guessing it is preschool. I have made you a Superhero cape for your birthday…I can’t wait to see your face when you open it.
You still love to sing, and dance. You love watching So You Think You Can Dance, which I record for you. You are great at following the dance moves. You only need to watch it once or twice, and bang! You have it nailed! Funnily enough you taught yourself to breakdance well before I ever showed you on TV.
You still adore your Bunny and must sleep with her every night. You’re still napping during the day when you are at home, but not at preschool. We have done a lot of work with your hypersensitivity to noise, and aside from your sister screaming in the car, there’s not much that bothers you these days. You are still allergic to dairy, but we have another appointment at the Allergy Clinic next month, so we will see how you go with the skin prick test. Other than that, you are in good health and you are such a happy, cheerful little boy.
Happy Birthday, Henry. Four. I can’t believe it.
We love you, sweetheart.
