How small?

July 10, 2008 at 10:32 am | In General Sewing | 6 Comments

I was excited last night to get back to my sewing machine and finish off a little project I started last week.

I made this from a pattern on Nested blog. It’s a great little pattern and the instructions are clear, and the illustrations excellent. And I know I sound very ungrateful when I say this, but I wanted to run it by you…

Is it too small??

The neck size for this bib is just 3 inches across. Could it really be that babies are that small? Have I forgotten already?

I looked around Henry’s room to see if there was something stuffed to put the bib on to show you the scale, but there was nothing that ‘universal’.

Who has a baby? Is three inches enough?

(I know I can make bigger ones, I can make any size now. But these are very sweet and I would like to make more tiny ones. I just want to know if they will be able to be used!)

  1. My just turned 3 month old has a neck circumference of between 9 and 10 inches. I wouldn’t want anything tighter than 10 around it. Unfortunately, I can’t remember the math to translate that to diameter for you.

  2. Also meant to say- that is incredibly cute. I’d want to make more too.

  3. Diameter = circumference/pi, so 10/3.14 = 3.18, which means your 3 inch diameter would be just right for Lisa’s baby according to her comment. So I also suppose that the bib would fit an infant.
I made a few baby bibs recently, and they seemed very tiny to me, but I was actually able to fit it around my neck, which is about 12 inches around. That pattern was supposed infant sized.
I’m sure the pattern is correct for an infant, but you may want to make some bigger ones to grow into. This one is so cute – I love the colors!

  4. I love reading your blog and keeping up on your projects!
The baby bibs are too cute however considering what Lisa said above that the bib would fit her 3 month old you might want to make them larger since the typical baby doesn’t start drueling from teething until around 4 or 5 months and wouldn’t start eating till 5 or 6 months. Just something to think about. Good luck!

  5. I think it will be fine, even for a bigger bub. I wouldn’t stress.

    Very cute too!

  6. very cute. but ktoompas is right, you need to make some bigger ones for when you really need them – from 6 months old. Remember the times when you dress them all nice and pretty and then have to put a horrible bib on them. Then if it did match the clothes it would only last a couple of hours and you then have to replace it with anthother AGGHHH!
