Mail tart

July 30, 2008 at 12:52 pm | In I love this | 4 Comments

My friend Julie has started knitting (I have told her to start a blog now!) and she knows how much I love to see the mailman at the front door. (Do you know I once joked to the parcel delivery man that I see him more than my husband? He has always been a little bit wary of me since then. Especially now that I answer the door with a huge pregnant belly……)

Anyway, so he delivered a package to me last week that had these beautiful treasures inside:

A gorgeous, long, wide, soft scarf made of Baby Alpaca. It is so deliciously soft. I have been wearing this nearly every day, but I have just been waiting for some light to photograph it. (So tired of the constant big dark clouds lately).

And these beauties for the baby girl:

I love how sweet and simple they are!

For years I have been hand-making things for Julie. Usually ugly, but always made with love, and this time she sent a little card to say that it was about time she made me something ugly, but with love.

The problem is, there is nothing ugly about either of these treasures! Julie, thank you so much for your thoughtfulness! I love them!

If anyone has any good links for a new knitter, please leave them in the comments for Julie to read. Thank you!

And these photos were taken in the baby girl’s room, which is coming along nicely, so enjoy the sneak peeks….

6″ – 12″ Mini Quilt Trading Swap

July 30, 2008 at 12:34 pm | In Doll Quilts, Swaps | 3 Comments

My partner in this swap, SheltonDHW, and I orchestrated a very “tricky-trick” (as Henry would say) and managed to have our little quilts arrive at each other’s houses, on the opposite side of the world, on the same day.

Here is the gorgeous little quilt that arrived at my house this week!

This is pretty amazing. It is entirely paper-pieced, which, considering I have never tried this method, is probably very lost on me. But, when you realise that this quilt is just 7″ square, and those tiny pieces (see bottom right corner) are just 3/8″ wide, then (are you with me?) you get the significance of how impressive this is.

I adore the colours. The pink binding is so perfect, and this will look lovely up on the wall in my sewing room when I start to hang all my doll quilts. There is even some orange in there – I love it!

Thank you too, SheltonDHW for the lovely little extras! And thank you for a wonderful swap!

Now, what did I send in return? This little quilt:

I know what you’re going to say. “She already made one like this!” And you’d be right. I made some flying geese for Helen in Doll Quilt Swap #3.

But you see, this is the story. I bought, and used, these fabrics for my Doll Quilt Swap #4…

…..and when I finished that quilt (still to be blogged – it’s in transit), I felt a yearning to put these with white. Again. And the theme for the July swap was triangles. I tried to think of other designs, but kept coming back to the flying geese. I wondered if I could make them smaller this time and more accurate and really try and get my points right.

And so this mini-quilt was born….

And hand-quilted again with white perle cotton….

So I apologise for the same old, same old, but, you have to admit, it does look fresh and pretty, doesn’t it?

Shelton DHW wrote a lovely post here.

Thanks for all the great advice re the fabric for the nappy bag. You convinced me, so I wilted and bought the tangerine, and a stack pack of the other fabrics that Kathy has, in order to add some variety inside the bag, with the pockets.

Choices, choices

July 27, 2008 at 9:40 am | In Fabric, General Sewing | 8 Comments

Remember I bought a pattern for a nappy bag, and I was waiting for the Denyse Schmidt County Fair fabric to be available?

Well, it was released, and I bought some online from Pink Chalk Fabrics (great little online shop, excellent service).

I chose this fabric to be the main fabric:

And some of these to make the pockets:

But I must admit that, in my hot little hands, the colour of the first print, is, let’s say, a trifle tending towards, um,  baby poo. Which, in itself, is not such a bad colour for a nappy bag. Think of the time saved in washing off the random splatters of projectile poo as we struggle in a public toilet changing area?

Or, let’s not actually think about these things.

Let’s imagine that all babies are sweet and smell good and sleep a lot. And don’t cry. Except when they are hungry. Or cold.

Anyway. Where was I?

So I was all set to go with my baby poo coloured nappy bag, and then I saw these new fabrics in the same shop:

New Amy Butler August Fields fabric. I love, love, love the one on the bottom left. It is called Fresh Start Tangerine. You know, tangerine – like orange.

But then I am very, very fond of the dark pinks in the Denyse Schmidt fabrics. The baby poo – not so sure.

Which fabrics do you think I should use?

Keep this in mind:

  • the pattern calls for home-decor weight fabric, which does limit my choices.
  • yes, I have bought enough fabric already in the baby poo, but my husband doesn’t read my blog, so who cares? It will find another home in another project.
  • despite my love of orange, “baby sista’s” room is looking, er, decidedly non-orange. Like none. At all. So it would not be going overboard to make a tangerine nappy bag. “Tangerine”. I love that word.

Tell me your thoughts…..

Aw, shucks

I have been nominated by both AJ and Helen for a Brilliante Weblog Award. Thank you girls, you are very kind!

Here’s the rules:
Put the logo on your blog.
Add a link to the person who awarded you.
Nominate at least 7 other blogs.
Add links to those blogs on yours.
Leave a message for your nominees on their blogs.

I know lots of you have already received the award, so I will try not to double up. Here are 7 blogs that I love to read:

Creative Controller (even though she is semi-retired). Donna is my original sewing buddy, and still the best!

dearfii is Fi who I recently swapped with. She is as addicted to swaps as I am, but much, much more talented!

Mushroom Villagers is Irene who makes some of the most beautiful quilts I have seen, and also makes beautiful children!! Plus I love her photos of Oregon. They remind me of my time in the Pacific NW.

Obsessed With Fabric is Beth who is a new blogger and who has thrown herself into the world of swapping, and making some lovely little quilts.

Pigeon Pair is Christie, who not only makes gorgeous things, but takes beautiful photos too.

Tallgrass Prairie Studio is Jacquie who seems to come up with really unique ideas and pulls them off beautifully.

Knitting After Hours is Shelton DHW who I discovered through a swap. I love her creations!

I hope that you enjoy having a look at some new blogs!

Doll Quilts – Sneak Peeks

July 19, 2008 at 10:15 am | In Doll Quilts, Swaps | 5 Comments

I have been working on little quilts for two swaps over the last few weeks. One for the 6″-12″ Mini Quilt Trading Swap, and one for Doll Quilt Swap #4.

I started with the Doll Quilt Swap first, you might remember the fabric I purchased at the Quilt Show..

I’m not going to tell you all about it just yet, as it was my (secret) partner’s description of her preferences that inspired me to make this quilt. I’ll wait until she receives it.

In the meantime, here’s a sneak peek:

I will tell you that I machine quilted this MYSELF, and am reasonably happy with the result. Which is a breakthrough, for me. That’s why I love doing these swaps, they challenge me.

——

For the 6″-12″ Mini Quilt Trading Swap, my partner is not a secret (although she may not be comfortable with me revealing her name to the blogging world), but I don’t want to ruin her surprise, so I will just show you the back until she receives it:

Label inspired by Fi, my last swap partner!

New Pet

July 17, 2008 at 12:10 pm | In General Sewing | 6 Comments

Whilst I love the idea of a pet, it doesn’t really suit our family. Henry’s dermatologist gave the big thumbs down to cats and dogs, and we do like to go away as often as possible; which, to me, adds up to not enough of a commitment to take care of an animal.

So when Henry fell in love with a birdcage in a shop on Monday, I thought the least I could do was make something to go in it.

He even helped me choose the fabrics.

I am hoping he will tire of it soon, and it can go in the baby’s room. It will look so pretty against the blue wall. With a ‘Swell’ birdie, perhaps…

Thanks so much to Spool for the bird pattern. How pretty is their bird mobile?

The State of The World

July 16, 2008 at 4:33 pm | In Miscellaneous | 1 Comment

We watched the movie Blood Diamond the other night. Whilst I enjoyed the movie, I was horrified by the storyline. The thought of all those young children armed with machine guns, drugged and fighting a war over diamonds? Trained to shoot innocent civilians including women and other children? It made me ill.

Add that to the media beat-up about the general state of the world of late, and the next few days left me with the feeling that whilst my little corner of the world is safe and comfortable, the rest of the world was screwed. And what could I, just one individual, do to change that?

Whilst I haven’t answered that question yet, here is an example of what one individual did.

He got the world dancing, and I cried many tears with the realisation that maybe things weren’t so bad if people were dancing.

Make sure your speakers are turned on, and enjoy.

Help

July 16, 2008 at 2:48 pm | In Miscellaneous | 10 Comments

I have very wise and very clever readers. And I am asking for your opinion on what you would do in this situation. I am happy for you to disagree with what I did do – I’m sure it will come up again and maybe I will be more prepared next time.

I had a friend come to visit today with her two sons, aged 22 months and 4 and a bit (a year older than Henry). We don’t see them very often, maybe once every few months, although it’s been nearly a year, I think, since they have been to our house. We’ve been going to their house whilst her youngest, was, well, young.

Unbeknownst to me, about 10 minutes before they left, whilst my friend was packing up her things and changing the youngest’s nappy, her older boy, a year older than Henry, asked if he could “borrow” a particular toy of Henry’s. Not a favourite, or a particularly expensive or loved toy. Henry apparently agreed, but, of course, he didn’t understand the term “borrow”.

The first I knew about it was when the boy put the toy in his mother’s bag, and Henry came racing in, crying, asking for the toy back. The older boy then told me that Henry had agreed to lend the toy to him and he was taking it home. Henry was quite distressed at this and cried, “no!, no!” and took the toy.

Can I add, for the record, that Henry is extremely generous with sharing his toys when we have visitors? He doesn’t have any problems sharing. I am pretty sure that my readers who know Henry will back me up on this one.

So what would you do? Would you insist that your child lend the toy?

And what did I do? I asked Henry three times, trying to gently coerce him into saying yes, if he would let the boy take this toy home and bring it back next time, and each time he cried, “no!, no!”. And of course, I could have forced him, but here’s my issue; I would never let Henry take home a toy from someone’s house. Ever. No matter how much he loved it. And I feared that this would set a precedent for my own son; that this was appropriate behaviour.

The older boy screamed and screamed and screamed at his mother to go and get the toy and he WAS taking it home. I could hear him scream all the way down the street as they drove away. I admit, I was mortified. And I wonder, did I do the right thing?

I got mail

July 11, 2008 at 6:54 pm | In Quilts & Donna | 3 Comments

I love getting mail. Usually I get fabric in the mail, as I do most of my fabric shopping online. And that’s exciting. But look what I got today…

all the way from Donna.

I haven’t told you about our new joint quilt project. After we finished this one (which reminds me, I haven’t shown you finished pictures yet – the handsewn binding on this baby was finished during the last Copacabana weekend) we did a quick swap while we figured out the basis for our next project.

We came up with the idea of using the Katie JumpRope range of fabrics to make 12″ star blocks and they will be alternated with solid blocks of Katie fabric.

And now I have my first two blocks from Donna – don’t they look fantastic?

I’m very excited about this project. Now I just need to get started, and catch up!

How small?

July 10, 2008 at 10:32 am | In General Sewing | 6 Comments

I was excited last night to get back to my sewing machine and finish off a little project I started last week.

I made this from a pattern on Nested blog. It’s a great little pattern and the instructions are clear, and the illustrations excellent. And I know I sound very ungrateful when I say this, but I wanted to run it by you…

Is it too small??

The neck size for this bib is just 3 inches across. Could it really be that babies are that small? Have I forgotten already?

I looked around Henry’s room to see if there was something stuffed to put the bib on to show you the scale, but there was nothing that ‘universal’.

Who has a baby? Is three inches enough?

(I know I can make bigger ones, I can make any size now. But these are very sweet and I would like to make more tiny ones. I just want to know if they will be able to be used!)
